The Germantown High School Color Guard functions as the visual component of the GHS Varsity Marching Band. Color Guard is a separate class which meets fifth period during the fall semester only and is open to all students who pass the spring audition. Color Guard auditions for 2010 will be in May from 3:00 - 5:00 in the Germantown High School Band Room. You must successfully pass the audition to register for the Color Guard class. In order to audition you must fill out an application complete with teacher recommendations and a $10 non-refundable tryout fee, and your own flag. Students passing the audition will be given a rehearsal and performance schedule for the marching season.
Students receive instruction in flag and dance fundamentals, basic drill movement, and how music and movement are coordinated. Students must be enrolled in the Color Guard class to participate, and after school and summer rehearsal time is required, no exceptions. Students must provide their own transportation to and from all home games, camps, and after school rehearsals. Color Guard members cannot ride the bus home from school on rehearsal days. They must have their own transportation.
The Color Guard rehearses 5th period during the school day, and Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday afternoons from 2:45 - 4:00 during the marching season (usually August- October). Students are also required to attend Color Guard Camp and Varsity Band Camp to be eligible to perform. The fee for Varsity Color Guard members is $175. This offsets the cost of camp instruction, uniforms, flags, drill sets, and other accessories.
Performance include: All football games (usually 10), three marching contests (all on Saturday), The Germantown Christmas Parade, Band Booster performance, and some special events determined by the director. All Color Guard members receive a calendar of all performance dates and times three or four months in advance. All rehearsals, camps, and performances are required for all members, please do not ask to be excused for jobs, family vacations, or transportation problems. Each guard member is needed for a successful performance. Do your part to make the Color Guard strong.
Color Guard auditions will be held in May 2010 in the GHS Band room. A four day clinic will be conducted where students will have the opportunity to work with veteran guard members on the basic skills needed for the audition. Each student will be required to show a mastery of certain flag and marching fundamentals. They will also learn and perform a brief flag and dance routine and each person auditioning will need to fill out an application form complete with teacher recommendations. Students who are absent or attend late will find it hard to catch up. Please do not ask to be excused early from the audition. Make a commitment to do your best.
